PITTSBURGH-For the second consecutive week, University of Pittsburgh senior sprinter Cambrya Jones has been named the Women's Big East Track Athlete of the Week.
Jones competed in the Sea Ray Relays this weekend and ran in the competitive Sea Ray Showcase which featured the best heats in nine events at the meet in Knoxville, Tenn. She won the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.31. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native and Woodland High School product also participated as a member of the 400-meter relay team that finished second in the showcase with a time of 45.07.
"This came as a surprise to me, but I'm honored to win this award," Jones said. "I'm excited to see where the rest of the season takes me."
Jones won Big East honors last week after setting the school record in the 200-meter dash at the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., with a time of 23.10. That mark qualified her for the Olympic Team Trials which will be held in Eugene, Ore., June 22-25.
She currently holds the Big East's top time in the 100-meter dash (11.57), 200-meter dash (23.10) and as part of the 400-meter relay team (44.90).
Jones joins Pitt sophomore Brycen Spratling as Big East Track Athlete of the Week as he earned the men's award.
"I think this shows the direction our program is going," Pitt head coach Alonzo Webb said. "It's really gratifying to see. I've seen a different focus from Cambrya this year and with this being her senior year she knew she wanted to make her last year her best year."
