PITTSBURGH—Seven members of Pitt’s women’s track and field team garnered a 2012 NCAA East Regional Track and Field Championship berth in Jacksonville, Fla. May 24-26.
Leading the Panthers with her fourth appearance at the NCAA East regional meet, senior Cambrya Jones is seeded among the top six in two individual events. She is seeded No. 4 in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 100-meter dash.
Jones is coming off impressive performances at the ECAC Championships where she won the 100-meter dash crown. She is also the Big East Outdoor Champion in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.
Jones’ time of 22.91 in the 200-meter event is currently No. 9 nationally, while her mark of 11.28 is tied for 11th in the 100-meters. Both times are school records.
“I expect to see us have some national qualifiers,” Pitt head coach Alonzo Webb said. “Cambrya has been competing so well all year long and that should continue this weekend.”
Jones and junior Ashley Woodford qualified for the NCAA Championships at the regional meet last year as half of the 400-meter relay team that crossed the finish line in 44.32. They will be joined by sophomore Jordan Hoyt and junior Arielle Fonrose this season and enter the regional meet seeded ninth.
Hoyt finished third in the 200-meter dash finals at the ECAC Championships after winning the prelims in the event (23.96).
Junior Jonnique Lawrence will compete in the 200-meter dash and is seeded 13th in the event. She finished third at the Big East Outdoor Championships in both the 200-meter (23.74) and 400-meter dashes (53.79).
Woodford is making her third appearance at the regional meet, while sophomore Jessica Rocco is making her second consecutive trip. Rocco is seeded 27th in the javelin throw. Freshman Taylor Slaney will join Rocco in the javelin.
