PITTSBURGH-Coming off an impressive performance at the NCAA East Regionals, the University of Pittsburgh men's and women's track and field teams will send six student-athletes to Des Moines, Iowa for the NCAA Outdoor Championships held June 6-9 at Drake University.
Senior Cambrya Jones headlines the women's team as she makes her second consecutive appearance at nationals and will be competing in three events - the 100 and 200 meter-dashes and as a member of the 400-meter relay.
Jones finished third in the 200 meters at the East Regionals with a time of 22.72, eclipsing her previous school record of 22.91 from earlier this season. Jones also placed fifth overall in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.35 at regionals.
The Pittsburgh, Pa. native and Woodland Hills High School product enters the NCAAs as the No. 3 seed in the 200-meter dash and the No. 11 seed in the 100-meter event.
Jones and Woodford made up half of the 2011 400-meter relay team that finished 14th last year at nationals (44.24).
On the men's side, senior Jermaine Lowery will make his second straight showing at the national meet, qualifying in the 400-meter hurdles after placing eighth (50.65) at regionals.
"I'm hoping to make it to the finals again this year," Lowery said. "My training's been going really well."
Lowery is looking to build off his 21st place finish at the 2011 NCAA Championship and believes his experience at nationals last year will benefit him this time around.
"Competing on this level last year gave me the confidence that I could compete with the best athletes in the nation," Lowery said.
Freshman Joshua Thompson rounds out the Panthers who advanced to nationals. He qualified for nationals in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.87 at regionals.
