PITTSBURGH - The Pitt track and field team gave back to the City of Pittsburgh this past weekend. More than 100 track and field and cross country student-athletes rolled up their sleeves on Sept. 8 to help transform the Homewood neighborhood. The Love Your Block program was created by Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and The Home Depot Foundation to revitalize the city, `block by block.'  With grant money provided by Home Depot, the selected groups purchase equipment and supplies to beautify and repair city neighborhoods.

Many older buildings in Homewood were private properties and are still off-limits to city cleaning crews.  However, Pitt student-athletes made time to contribute to this effort despite being in the midst of preparing for upcoming meets. Led by Pitt head track coach Alonzo Webb, the group eagerly helped by clearing out buildings and weeding the areas surrounding them.

"Our entire team really enjoyed being able to assist another community.  It was also so rewarding to see how well received we were by the residents," said Nicole Ryan, senior member of the track and field team.

The Cathy & John M. Pelusi Family Life Skills Program is dedicated to engaging student- athletes in experiences that involve the university, local and national communities.
