PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh men’s and women’s track and field team kicks off the 2011-12 indoor season with its annual Blue-Gold Meet on Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday, Dec. 3. Friday's action begins at 3 p.m. at the Cost Center and will feature events in the sprints, hurdles, jumps and throws.
The competition will resume on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. at Fitzgerald Field House with distance and relay events.
The two-day event is free and open to the public. All fans are encouraged to bring a canned good as a donation to the Run Down Hunger campaign to aid local families.
The Panthers return seven NCAA Regional qualifiers from last season and three qualifiers for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in senior sprinters Jermaine Lowery and Cambrya Jones and junior Ashley Woodford.
Lowery’s time of 50.84 in the 400M hurdles garnered him All-Big East honors at the 2011 conference outdoor championships while Jones qualified for NCAAs with a time of 11.67 in the 100M dash.
Sophomores Reginald Steele IV and Jessica Rocco will look to build off their strong freshmen campaigns where they advanced to the regional championships in the long jump and javelin, respectively. Steele’s leap of 7.48 in the long jump and Rocco’s throw of 46.61in the javelin placed amongst the Big East elite.
Sophomore Ashley Corum claimed the 2011 Big East Indoor Triple Jump title when she soared 12.51 meters.
Along with Lowery, Jones and Woodford, senior Dontave Cowsette
junior Tashaun Hill
look to return to the NCAAs. They both advanced to the NCAA Regional Outdoor Championships the past two seasons. Cowsette qualified in the 800M (1:50.49) while Hill advanced in the 100M hurdles (14.26).
Head coach Alonzo Webb and his staff are excited about the returning student-athletes, as well as the newcomers and how they will perform in their first action of the season.
“The annual Blue and Gold meet gives us an indication of how well we have trained during the preseason,” Webb said. “It also gives us some insight on how our incoming freshmen and transfers have adapted to their new environment. This time of the year is really exciting to see how the team comes together.”
Webb rounded out his staff last month with the hiring of throws coach Chip Brundage and Alonzo Webb III. Brundage joins the Panthers after coaching at Troy University where he guided three athletes to Sun Belt titles and coached seven NCAA Regional qualifiers. Webb III will oversee the jumps and multi events after serving as a volunteer assistant coach last season.
They join assistant coaches Clinton Bell (Distance) and Kia Davis (Sprints/Hurdles), making an impressive and experienced staff.
