PITTSBURGH - Pitt volleyball capped off its preseason training with its Blue-Gold Scrimmage Saturday afternoon at the Fitzgerald Field House with the Blue team taking the match 2-1.
The Blue squad topped the Gold in Saturday's contest winning the first two sets 25-19 and 25-11 but dropped the third set 22-25.
Freshman Mariah Bell led the way for Blue who recorded an unofficial .455 hitting percentage after notching 12 kills on 22 attempts. Defensively, former USA Collegiate National Team member Delaney Clesen tallied 20 digs during the match.
The first set started off in a tight race going back and forth between points with six different ties but the Blue team began to pull away halfway through the set holding a 19-13 lead over Gold. The Gold team nearly pulled off a comeback at the end after pulling the score back within three to make it 22-19. However, Gold was unable to top Blue as it took the first set 25-19 on three final kills. Leading Blue in the first set was junior right side hitter Casey Durham who recorded five kills and senior libero Lindsey Zitzke who put down two service aces. For the Gold team Maria Genitsaridi, a sophomore outside hitter, also had five kills.
Blue continued its success in the second set taking the lead very early on. Leading the way for Blue were freshman outside hitter Mariah Bell and senior right side hitter Mechael Guess. Bell recorded four kills on five attempts while Guess recorded five kills on 11 attempts. Blue ran away with the game winning the second 25-11.
Blue was unable to pull off the sweep as Gold finished strong and won the third set 25-22. The set came down to the wire as the teams were tied 21-21 but Gold was able to hold on for the win. Gold received strong production defensively from both senior Jessica Wynn and freshman Angela Seman who both recorded 5 digs that game.
Pitt will open its regular season next weekend at the Hampton Inn Invitational where they will take on Middle Tennessee State, Dayton and tournament host Bowling Green.
