PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh women’s volleyball team dropped its match against Lipscomb in three sets, this afternoon, as the second day of the Pitt Invitational has started. Pitt slipped to 0-6 on the year with scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-13.
Senior middle Imani Harper recorded eight kills in the match.
During the first set, Pitt trailed 9-3 and Pitt called a timeout. The Panthers then came out and scored two quick points. During those volleys, Harper recorded two digs. She finished the match with three digs and a block assist.
Senior Rachel Kalberer earned a solo block in the opening set, making it Pitt’s second stuff of the contest.
Offensively, freshman Brittany Lhota tallied three kills in the first set, while senior Alyssa King assisted on all nine Panther kills. King would finish the match with 21 assists.
Later, Pitt took a 5-4 lead in the second set with a kill from Kalberer. The play began with a dig from sophomore Michelle Walker, who stepped back on the court after serving to make the pass.
Back-to-back blocks from the Panthers and a senior Amy Town kill forced a Lipscomb timeout, later in the set. Pitt trailed 16-8 in the contest, until a few substitutions led to a momentum shift for Pitt. The Panthers would go on a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 16-12.
Harper recorded back-to-back kills with sets from senior Allyson Hodnik, and pulled the Panthers to within three at 18-15. However, the Lady Bison would push ahead for the eventual win with a 7-2 run. Lipscomb took the set with a 25-17 score.
Harper collected a set-high five kills in the second game. She held a .500 hitting clip and chipped in a dig.
In the final set, Kalberer tallied four kills. Also playing outside, sophomore Alexa Campbell made an aggressive swing that hit just inside the white line, to give Pitt a point later in the set.
Defensively, Town chipped in four digs in the third set. In the match, she had five digs total, three kills and two block assists.
