The Pittsburgh Panthers volleyball team completed a 3-0 sweep of visiting Duquesne in its home opener Sept. 5 at Fitzgerald Field House. The victory improves the Panthers' record to 4-1 on the season.
The Panthers were led by junior Heather Haff, a Pittsburgh native and graduate of North Allegheny High, who recorded a match and career-high .611 hitting percentage on the day with her 11 kills on 18 attempts without an error.
Pittsburgh took control of the match early and rolled to a 15-4 win in game one. The Panthers held onto their momentum and completed the sweep with 15-8 and 15-9 victories in games two and three, respectively.
The Panthers also received a stellar effort from the senior duo of Jen Nickels (Springfield, Ohio/Springfield North) and Stacy Renick (Eagan, Minn./Eagan). Nickels posted 12 kills, while Renick had 11 to go along with nine digs. Sophomore setter Carrie Norris (Fostoria, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) chipped in 35 assists and nine digs in the win.
The Panthers will return to action this weekend when they host the Pittsburgh Invitational Sept. 8-9. They will take on Arkansas Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. and Miami (Ohio) and Indiana Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. and 7:30, respectively.
