PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Pittsburgh volleyball team opened its 2001 Big East campaign this past weekend with a 3-0 sweep over host Providence Sept. 22.

Sophomore outside hitter Wendy Hatlestad (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) led the Panthers with a match-high 14 kills. Freshman outside hitter Gini Ullery (Tracy, Calif./Tracy High) also recorded double-figures in kills with 10 and junior setter Carrie Norris (Fostoria, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) had 35 assists.

Pittsburgh posted a decisive 30-15 victory in the first game, before capturing the second and third games by scores of 30-26 and 30-20, respectively.

The win improved the Panthers' record to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in Big East play. Pittsburgh will return home this weekend to host Seton Hall Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. and St. John's Sept. 30 at 2 p.m.
