Women's Volleyball Slips On The Road At No. 19 St. John's

QUEENS, N.Y.--Junior Kelly Campbell recorded her seventh double-double of the season, as Pitt's women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match to No. 19 St. John's at Carnescca Arena, this afternoon. The Red Storm won the match with scores of 30-28, 33-35, 30-12 and 30-28. The Panthers fell to 8-8 on the season and 2-1 in the Big East, while St. John's improved to 18-2 overall and 3-0 in the league. Campbell (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield/Pacific) posted 16 kills and 10 digs for her eighth double-double of the year. She also added two block solos in the match. Junior Stephanie Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) led the squad with a .500 hitting percentage, as she recorded 13 kills off 22 attacks and just two errors. Ross added seven blocks in the match, while senior Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) chipped in 12 kills and six digs. Sophomore Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) was close to a double-double as she tallied eight blocks and nine kills. Game two opened with Pitt trailing 8-1. Then a kill from Campbell on the next ball began a 12-5 run for the Panthers, tying the game at 13. Pitt and St. John's then rallied through the next several plays, including three ties, before the Panthers would take a 23-22 lead. However, the lead would be short lived as the two squads would tie the game eight more times. Finally, with the score tied at 33, Pitt took a 34-33 lead with a Red Storm attack error. Campbell would then record the final kill of the game for the game point at 35-33. Ross tallied five kills, a .625 hitting clip and two solo blocks with an assist in the game. Next, Pitt held a 10-8 lead in game four after a St. John's attack error. However the Red Storm would go on a 7-2 run before the Panthers would score again.
Ross would then record a kill and tie the game at 18-18 several plays later. Shortly, Pitt would trail 23-18 after a ball handling error, but back-to-back kills from Dooley and Andreyko would close the gap, 24-22 in favor of SJU. Campbell then tied the game at 26 with a kill from the outside. However, the Red Storm would hold off the Panthers in a 30-28 decision. In the opening game of the match, Pitt held the lead once at 5-4, after a St. John's attack error. Trailing by no more than five points at any time, the Panthers tied the score seven times in the contest. Leading the Panthers were Andreyko and Campbell, who recorded a team-high five kills in the game. In game three Pitt managed just seven kills, as they scored 12 points against the Red Storm. Sophomore Michelle Rossi (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) added 17 digs in the match, while junior Nicole Taurence (Trenton, Mich./Trenton) posted 43 assists. The Panthers face UConn at 2 p.m. on Sunday. |
