COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Pitt volleyball standout Stephanie Williams has been selected to train and compete as part of the U.S. Collegiate National Team (CNT-Minneapolis) June 22-30 in Minneapolis, Minn.
“Congratulations to Stephanie on yet another accomplishment that she has worked very hard for,” said head coach Dan Fisher. “This is a great chance for her to compete at a high level and to represent Pitt and the U.S.A. We look forward to following her journey.”
Williams, a redshirt sophomore from Eastlake, Ohio, was a 2016 AVCA honorable mention All-America selection, in addition to an AVCA All-East Coast Region first team and All-ACC first team honoree.
The outside hitter returned from injury this past season to lead the Panthers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2004 and first-round win since 2003. Williams finished the 2016 season with a team-leading 467 kills, ninth-most in Pitt history, 308 digs and a team-high 16 double-doubles.
According to USA Volleyball, the CNT-Minneapolis squad, which is part of USA Volleyball’s High Performance pipeline and is considered a second tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team. The selected student-athletes will train June 22-26 at the University of Minnesota.
Afterward, athletes will be assigned to one of three 12-member teams and compete in a round-robin format at the Minneapolis Convention Center June 27-30. The matches are being held in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships under the same roof.
Athletes were selected through the U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryouts held March 3-5 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Williams is one of five student-athletes out of the ACC to be chosen.
