PITTSBURGH – Pitt head volleyball coach Dan Fisher announced the addition of middle hitter Alex Rosignol Monday morning, who will be joining the squad for the 2017 season.
The Mount Carmel, Ill., native arrives in Pittsburgh as a true senior following a three-year stint at Southern Illinois University. She will use her final year of eligibility with the Panthers.
“We are fortunate to add someone like Alex to our team at this point in the year,” said Fisher. “It became clear very quickly that we were a good fit for each other. Pitt provides the academics she is looking for and our team needed some more depth in the middle.”
In her final season with Southern Illinois, Rosignol received First Team All-MVC honors after finishing the season 26th in the nation and third in the Missouri Valley Conference with a .376 hitting percentage. Rosignol also ranked second in the MVC with 1.14 blocks/set.
“Alex is an explosive player who can help us as both an attacker and blocker,” said Fisher. “We not only expect her to help on the court, but are excited by her leadership skills as well. With this addition, Pitt volleyball will have talent, depth and experience at every position.”
As a sophomore, she helped the Salukis to their best season in program history as the team earned a bid to the 2015 NCAA Tournament. She also was one of Southern Illinois’ top blockers during both her freshman and sophomore seasons.
“I chose Pitt because of its exceptional academic reputation along with the ambition and competitiveness of the volleyball program,” said Rosignol. “I knew coming here would challenge me both athletically and academically. I was attracted to the location because the urban setting is different from anything I’ve ever experienced and after meeting the girls and the coaches I was more than confident in calling Pittsburgh my new home.”
Rosignol, a three-sport athlete at Mount Carmel High School, received numerous awards throughout her high school career. She was a three-time MVP, 2012 Big 8 All-Conference selection and Champaign News-Gazette Top-100 honoree in volleyball. Rosignol was also a four-year varsity basketball player and ran varsity track for two years.
Rosignol rounds out this year’s incoming class, joining true freshmen Kayla Lund and Chinaza Ndee.
Following a historic season in 2016 that saw Pitt earn its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2004 and first postseason win since 2003, the Panthers hope to find continued success in 2017. Looking for its fourth-straight 20-win season, Pitt has a tough slate ahead of them, with matches versus eight teams that appeared in last year’s NCAA Tournament, including Washington and Creighton, who bowed out in the Elite Eight. Pitt will play 13 home games this season at the Fitzgerald Field House.
Tickets for the 2017 volleyball season are now on sale and be purchased by calling the Pitt Ticket Office at (800) 643-PITT (7488) or by logging on to PittsburghPanthers.com.
