PITTSBURGH - University of Pittsburgh women's volleyball head coach Dan Fisher has announced the Panthers' 2014 schedule. Pitt is entering its second year in the ACC, and its second season under the direction of Fisher.
The Panthers will play three opponents who finished the 2013 season ranked in the nation's top 25 (No. 14 Duke, No. 17 Florida State and No. 24 North Carolina) and seven matches against 2013 NCAA Tournament participants.
The Panthers will open their season on the road at the Hampton Inn Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio. Pitt will face Dayton, tournament host Bowling Green and Middle Tennessee from August 29-30. The Panthers will then travel to Boulder, Colo. to take part in a tournament hosted by Colorado of the Pac-12. Other opponents include Georgia Southern and Portland State.
Pitt opens its home schedule hosting back-to-back tournaments at the Fitzgerald Field House beginning with the Panther Classic from Sept. 12-13. This tournament will feature a matchup against cross-town opponent and defending A-10 champion Duquesne. Additional opponents include Niagara and Norfolk State.
The following week, Pitt returns to action hosting the Pitt Panther Invitational with matches against Sacred Heart, USF and Delaware on Sept. 19-20. This will be the 10th straight year Pitt and USF have met.
Non-conference play concludes at home against another 2013 NCAA Tournament team, LIU Brooklyn. The Blackbirds have won two straight NEC championships.
Pitt begins its ACC conference schedule with three straight home matches at the Fitzgerald Field House, beginning with Boston College on Sept. 28. The home stand will also include North Carolina (Oct. 3) and Notre Dame (Oct. 10). North Carolina finished the 2013 season at 27-5 and earned a berth to the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
Pitt then hits the road from Oct. 12-19 to take on three ACC opponents, Syracuse (Oct. 12), Georgia Tech (Oct. 17) and Clemson (Oct. 19).
The Panthers return home on October 24 and will face ACC runner-up Florida State. The Seminoles finished the season ranked No. 17 and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championship before losing to national runner-up Wisconsin.
On November 7, Pitt will be in Durham, N.C. to battle the 2013 ACC Champion, Duke. The Blue Devils finished the season 28-5 overall and 18-2 in the ACC.
Pitt finishes the regular-season with a three game road trip at Virginia (Nov. 23) and Louisville (Nov. 26), before closing the season Nov. 28 against Notre Dame.
Additional home matches include ACC newcomer Louisville (Oct. 26), Syracuse (Nov. 2), Miami (Nov. 14), Virginia Tech (Nov. 16), and NC State (Nov. 21). On the road, Pitt faces Virginia Tech (Oct. 31), and Wake Forest (Nov. 8).
The NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship first and second rounds will be held Dec. 5-8. The NCAA finals are Dec. 18-20 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
