PITTSBURGH--University of Pittsburgh head volleyball coach Dan Fisher will travel to Pula, Croatia as the head coach of the BIP/USA Development Team participating in the 2014 European Global Challenge. Also joining him on the team are Pitt volleyball players Kate Yeazel and Jessica Wynn.
The BIP/USA Development Team is one of 12 teams that will make up the U22 tournament field. Six U.S. teams, including BIP/USA, will be matched by six international teams from countries such as Slovenia, Italy, Russia, and host Croatia. Opening ceremonies for the event will be held on the evening of July 13, followed by tournament competition from July 14-17.
Each U.S. team will play three randomly selected international opponents in the first round, and vice versa. After the initial three matches, the top two U.S. and European teams will automatically advance to the Championship Tournament. The eight teams without automatic bids will play challenge matches to determine which four teams among them will complete the Championship Tournament field.
Fisher is set to begin his second season as Pitt volleyball's head coach. The Panthers went 19-14 overall in his first year at the helm, including winning seven of their final eight matches. He possesses significant experience in international competition, previously serving as an assistant coach for the gold medal women's USA National Pan Am Cup team in 2012 and playing professionally in Belgium, Spain and Switzerland for five years.
The two Pitt juniors accompanying Fisher are both coming off successful 2013 seasons. Wynn tallied a team-best 410 kills on an impressive .254 hitting percentage and was a Third Team All-ACC honoree, while Yeazel racked up a career-best 315 kills and 93 blocks.
Concordia head women's volleyball coach Trevor Johnson will act as assistant coach to the BIP/USA Development Team. Johnson was Fisher's assistant for two years with the Eagles before assuming head coaching duties in 2013 when Fisher was hired by Pitt. Other conferences represented on the BIP/USA team are the Big 12, SEC, MWC, Mid-American, America East, Patriot League and Colonial Athletic Association.
BIP/USA opens play vs. Bosnia & Herzegovina at 7 a.m. local time (EST) on July 14. Additional event information can be found at http://www.bringitusa.com/gc14/.
