PITTSBURGH -- With regular-season competition quickly approaching, the University of Pittsburgh women's volleyball team will hold its Blue-Gold Intrasquad Scrimmage at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers vs. Panthers match will be free and open to the public.
The tune-up comes less than a week before Pitt's season-opening bouts. The Panthers head to the Mizzou Tournament August 30-31 in Columbia, Mo., where they will take on Arkansas State, Missouri, South Dakota State and Idaho State over the course of the weekend.
The 2013 campaign is a promising one for the Panthers being led by first-year head coach Dan Fisher. Pitt returns five starters and 12 players overall from last year's squad, including Second Team All-Big East performer Monica Wignot. She is joined by juniors Jessica Wynn and Lindsey Zitzke who led the team in kills and assists, respectively, in 2012.
Updates for the team's early training sessions can be found in the 2013 Preseason Central at PittsburghPanthers.com, complete with video interviews with players and more.
The upcoming Blue-Gold scrimmage and Mizzou Tournament kick off an exciting 2013 schedule. The Panthers return to Fitzgerald Field House on September 3 to host Poland's Tauron MKS Dabrowa Gornicza, a professional club from the Liga Siatkówki Kobiet (Polish Women's Volleyball League). Tickets for the exhibition match are $5 at the door. Group rate tickets (15 people or more) are also available for $1 and can be obtained by calling the Ticket Office at 800-643-PITT (7488).
Regular-season play will also feature Pitt's inaugural season in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Conference action kicks off with a home match on September 27 against Clemson (4 p.m.). Additionally, ACC showdowns with Georgia Tech (Sept. 29), Virginia Tech (Oct. 4), Syracuse (Oct. 20), Notre Dame (Nov. 3) and North Carolina State (Nov. 24) will be broadcast live on ESPN3. The match at Florida State on (Nov. 13) will air live on ROOT SPORTS.
