PITTSBURGH--Pitt volleyball put some of the finishing touches on its preseason training with the Blue-Gold Intrasquad Scrimmage with the Blue team winning 3-1 at Fitzgerald Field House on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers will now turn their attention to preparing for their first regular-season matches of the fall at Missouri's Tiger Classic on Aug. 30-31.
The Blue squad topped the Gold in Saturday's contest 25-18, 25-22, 23-25, 25-17. It took an early two-set lead with some help from a comeback. After winning the first frame relatively smoothly, the Blue team came from behind in the second. The offense ran often through freshman Maria Genitsaridi, who finished the match with an unofficial kills total of 13. Blue also saw a strong performance from transfer Jenna Potts, who posted one of the highest hitting percentages on the day and finished with a handful of blocks defensively.
Blue nearly pulled off a second come-from-behind performance in the third set, but Gold held on for the 25-23 decision. That momentum continued to sway in favor of Blue as the match continued. Despite Gold saving two match points at the end of the fourth, Blue came out on top.
Gold received strong production both offensively and defensively from Jessica Wynn, the Panthers' returning kills leader from 2012, totaling 16 kills and nearly as many digs.
Pitt will open its regular season at the Tiger Classic next weekend taking on Arkansas State, Idaho State, Missouri and South Dakota.
