PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team will host the University of Pittsburgh Panther Invitational on Friday, Aug. 31 and Saturday, Sept. 1, at the Fitzgerald Field House. Joining the Panthers will be Butler University, Coastal Carolina University and Howard University.
Admission is free for University of Pittsburgh students with a valid Pitt student ID, $5 for adults and $2 for youth and seniors (18 and younger and 55 and older) for each session. The Pitt contest on Friday night (7 p.m.) marks `Student Welcome Back Night,' which will feature free give-aways, food, a chance to win Pitt football sideline passes and a pizza party for the most spirited floor on campus.
Howard and Butler start tournament action at 5 p.m. on Friday, followed by the Panthers and Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m. Saturday's action begins at 11 a.m., while Pitt will play Howard at 1 p.m. and Butler 7 p.m.
Pitt is coming off a third place finish at the Mortar Board Premier tournament hosted by Purdue University. For her efforts at Purdue, sophomore setter Lindsey Zitzke was named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll. Zitzke had 74 assists, 21 digs, 10 kills, five blocks and hit at a .318 clip at the tournament.
Additionally, senior libero Margy Acton also had a successful weekend in West Lafayette, being named to the all-tournament team. Acton is 73 digs shy of becoming the 10th player in program history to reach the 1,000 career digs plateau.
Butler enters the Panther Invitational with a 2-1 record after playing in the DePaul Invitational last weekend. The Bulldogs won matches against Eastern Illinois and DePaul, and lost to Indiana State. Sophomore Belle Obert has posted a team-best 33 kills, while junior Maggie Harbison has 27 kills, and 27 digs.
Coastal Carolina (0-3) seeks its first win of the season after losing three games last weekend at the `Big Orange Bash' hosted by Clemson University. The Chanticleers lost to Clemson, Xavier and South Carolina State. Players to watch include junior Meghan Laffin, who leads the team with 37 kills, and sophomore Lian Bernett who recorded 32 kills and 21 digs at Clemson's tournament.
Howard University (0-1) is also looking to take a win at the Panther Invitational. Howard opened their season with a loss against Rider University on Aug. 25th. Sophomore's Stephanie Shultis and Meagan Lagerlef notched a team-high four kills and Alexis Skinner posted 14 digs.
