BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Pitt volleyball team began day two of the Hampton Inn Invitational off on the right foot, beating the Dayton Flyers 3-0 Saturday morning at Bowling Green's Stroh Center. The Panthers will now turn their focus to tonight's 7:30 p.m. game against tournament host Bowling Green.
For the second day in a row, senior Jessica Wynn led the Panthers notching 12 total kills. Both Casey Durham and Maria Genitsaridi added eight a piece to aid in the Pitt win. Durham finished eight of her 15 attempts to record a .467 hitting percentage.
The Panthers began the match by putting up 25 points to the Flyers 21 in the first set. Pitt took the first two points of the match and four of the first five points of the set to give the Panthers a 5-1 lead to start. A race to the finish throughout the entire set, Pitt was able to hold on to take the win. Aiding offensively in the first set for Pitt was Mechael Guess who went six-for-nine in kills.
What looked to be another close set between Pitt and Dayton turned out to be a run-away set for the Panthers. The beginning of the set brought five tied scores and five lead changes between the two teams. Pitt finished with an 11 point advantage over the Flyers to win their second set of the day.
Pitt prevailed in the third and final set of the match to sweep the Flyers 3-0. Pitt pulled away early on leading 11-5. After that point of the game, Dayton never came back within four points of Pitt. The Panther's largest lead of the weekend thus far came late in the second set when the two teams were split by a 14 point margin. Pitt ended the match with a 13 point lead and 25-12 win over the Flyers.
