BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team (3-0, 0-0 ACC) took home the tournament champs title after a weekend sweep at the Hampton Inn Invitational. The Panthers finalized the sweep this evening beating Bowling Green (0-3, 0-0) three sets to none and by scores of 25-19, 25-7 and 25-14 respectively.
Pitt concluded the weekend with two All-Tournament Team honorees including sophomore Maria Genitsaridi, who was named Tournament MVP, and senior Delaney Clesen. Genitsaridi recorded 29 kills on 64 attempts, hitting .375 on the weekend. She along with Clesen added six service aces each.
The Panthers continued their first set winning success against Bowling Green this evening, picking up the win by a score of 25-19. Another back-and-forth type set for the Panthers, the game included 10 tied scores and seven lead changes. Genitsaridi tallied six kills of her nine attempts, hitting .556 to begin the match.
The second set brought excitement to the floor for Pitt as the Panthers scored 13 unanswered points to begin the set. The Falcons were held to only seven points by Pitt the entire match and never took the lead once. As a team, Pitt posted 15 kills on 28 total attempts during the second set for a .464 hitting percentage. The second set score was finalized at 25-7.
The third and final set of the tournament resulted in a 25-14 Pitt win to cap off the weekend. For the second time that evening, the Panthers never gave up the lead. Pitt finished the game with five consecutive points and an 11 point advantage.
Senior setter Lindsey Zitzke recorded her first double-double of the season after finishing the match against Bowling Green with 24 assists and 10 digs.
The Panthers will continue on the road this coming weekend as they take off to Boulder, Colorado. Pitt will participate in its second tournament of the season, taking on Georgia Southern, Portland State and tournament host Colorado.
