PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh women’s volleyball team will close out regular-season action with two matches in the Aztec Turkey Time Tournament held at Peterson Gym on San Diego State’s campus this weekend. Pitt faces TCU at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 25 and host San Diego State at 10 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26.
The Panthers (18-13) are coming off a 3-1 Big East Tournament quarterfinal loss to Louisville on Friday. All-Big East First Team selection Kiesha Leggs tallied 12 blocks and 11 kills in the match, while freshman Jessica Wynn chipped in her first career double-double with 12 kills and 19 digs.
The Panthers have collected 10 or more blocks in 13 matches this season, including 28 in its last two contests. Pitt rejected a season-best 18 against St. John’s on Nov. 4 and is outblocking opponents with a +78.5 margin.
The Panthers have also outserved the field +66 on the year. Freshman Lindsey Zitzke has put down 47 aces this season. She is ranked fifth overall on the school’s single-season record list in that category and is two shy of tying for fourth place (Jenelle Lantagne - 1990).
TCU (23-7) advanced to the semifinals of the Mountain West Tournament, posting a straight-set victory over Boise State and falling to UNLV in four. Four Horned Frogs earned post-season honors, as Stephanie Holland was named the league’s Freshman of the Year and Kristen Hester, Sarah Joeckel and Jordan Raines garnered all-conference accolades.
The Panthers won the only other meeting against TCU in program history, a three-set sweep on Sept. 20, 2003.
San Diego State (17-9) suffered a first-round loss to UNLV in the Mountain West Tournament. Andrea Hannasch posted a match-high 15 kills in the contest. Hannasch was one of three members of the squad who earned all-conference honors, including Johnna Fouch and Raegan Shelton.
The Aztecs hold a 3-1 lead in the series, however the Panthers earned a 3-2 victory in the last meeting on Sept. 29, 1990.
